Three powertrain options are available in the 2022 Countryman, a 1.5-liter turbo-three with 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 189 hp and 207 lb-ft in the Countryman S or 228 hp and 258 lb-ft in the Countryman JCW, and a plug-in hybrid system that pairs the base 1.5-liter turbo I-3 with an electric motor for a total output of 221 hp and 284 lb-ft. All gas models except for the front-drive Countryman S and the Countryman S E All4 come standard with a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is optional on the front-drive base model and standard on the Countryman S E All4 plug-in hybrid. An eight-speed automatic comes standard on the front-drive Countryman S and optional on the all-wheel-drive-equipped base Countryman, Countryman S, and JCW. Cargo space in the 2022 Countryman is 17.6 cubic feet with the split-folding rear seats up and 47.6 cubic feet with them down. The Countryman S E All4 has slightly less cargo space at 17.2 cubic feet behind the second row and 47.4 cubic feet behind the front seats.
EPA fuel economy ratings for the base 2022 Countryman are 24/33 mpg city/highway with the manual or 24/32 mpg with the automatic. With all-wheel drive, those numbers drop to 22/32 mpg with the manual and 23/30 mpg with the automatic. The front-drive Countryman S is rated at 23/32 mpg with its standard automatic transmission while the all-wheel-drive Countryman S All4 is slightly less efficient at 21/31 mpg with the manual and 22/31 mpg with the automatic. The performance-minded Countryman JCW is the least efficient model at 21/29 mpg with the manual and 22/30 mpg with the automatic. The plug-in Countryman S E All4 can travel up to 12 miles in EV mode and up to 270 miles with a full charge and a full tank according to the EPA, with 27 mpg combined.
The NHTSA hasn’t crash-tested the 2022 Countryman. In IIHS testing, the Countryman received a Good score on all crashworthiness tests and a Marginal rating on the new headlights test (Good is the highest possible score). The crossover also received an Advanced rating on the front crash prevention test after it reduced the impact of a 12- and 25-mph crash by 7 mph (Superior is the highest possible score in front crash prevention). Models with the Fully Loaded package can be equipped with the Active Driving Assistant, which bundles forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and high beam assist.
