PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY
Powering the 2022 Toyota Prius is a 1.8-liter I-4 paired to an electric motor, a CVT, and either a nickel-metal hydride battery in the base model or lithium-ion battery on higher grades. Total system output is 121 hp. EPA fuel economy ratings are 54/50 mpg city/highway for all but Prius Two Eco, which is even more efficient at 58/53 mpg.
SAFETY
The 2022Toyota Prius received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS testing it received a Good score on all crashworthiness tests except for the passenger side small front overlap impact, where it hasn’t been tested (Good is the highest possible score). On the new headlights test, the 2021 Prius received an Acceptable rating; as a result, it qualified for the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick rating.
On the IIHS’ front crash prevention test, the 2022 Prius received a Superior rating after it avoided collisions in 12- and 25-mph tests (Superior is the highest rating on the front crash prevention test). All 2022 Prius cars include Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P), which bundles together adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane departure warning with steering assist, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on the Four and Four Touring models, and optional on the, Two, Two Eco, Three and Three Touring. After some big updates for 2022 that included a new all-wheel-drive option and restructured trim levels, the Prius returns for 2021 pretty much unchanged, aside from some improvements to the infotainment experience.
UTILITY
The 2022 Toyota Prius has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space that can be expanded via the standard split-folding rear seats. The Two, Three, and Three Touring models have slightly less cargo capacity at 24.6 cubic feet.
