Vehicle Summary
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is the hybrid variant of the Camry midsize sedan and it comes exclusively in a front-drive configuration. In terms of size, the Camry Hybrid slots above the more compact Prius hatchback and the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid but below the larger Avalon sedan.
Overview
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a new direct- and port-injected 2.5-liter I-4 that’s coupled to an electric motor, a lithium-ion or nickel metal hydride battery, and a CVT. Combined power output is 208 hp. EPA fuel economy ratings are 51/53 mpg city/highway in the base LE trim, which comes equipped with the lithium-ion battery, and 44/47 mpg on the SE and XLE grades, both of which use the nickel metal hydride battery.
Thanks to the TNGA platform, the Camry Hybrid’s batteries are now positioned under the rear seats, which means it now has the same 15.1-cubic-foot trunk as the gas-only variants and it can be expanded 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The gas-only Camry’s base L trim has the least cargo space at 14.1 cubic feet and doesn’t come with split-folding rear seats.
Safety
Like its gas-only sibling, the entire 2022 Camry Hybrid lineup comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P, which bundles together forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the XLE grade or as part of an optional package in the LE and SE trim. The XLE trim also gets rear automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. For as long as we can remember, the Toyota Camry has been comfortable and compliant, but not all that invigorating to drive. It was essentially the vanilla ice cream of family sedans. That all changed with its revamp a couple of years ago that marked this Toyota sedan’s eighth generation. A double-wishbone rear suspension, lower center of gravity and stiffer body structure all translated to a more dynamic and fun-to-drive experience. The Camry feels taut, but doesn’t compromise the comfortable manners for which it’s known.
