NEW 2022 Ram ProMaster
Available
2500 Cargo Low Roof 136WB
2500 Cargo High Roof 159WB
Overview
The 2022 ProMaster is Ram’s entry into the work-van segment. The ProMaster comes as either a cargo van or a passenger van in an assortment of size configurations. There are low- and high- roof variants, and wheelbases that stretch 118, 136 , and 159 inches giving the van a high degree of configurability. However, many of its rivals offer the same range of sizes and roof heights, but also have more powerful powertrains and the option of all-wheel drive. The ProMaster also lags behind competitors like the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter when it comes to towing, but compensates with good payload-carrying capability.
What’s New for 2022?
The 2022 model’s main safety features were a standard backup camera and available rear parking sensors. For 2021, the list has been expanded to include forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking. Also new for 2021 is a crosswind- assist function that’s standard across the ProMaster lineup. It helps drivers keep the vehicle stable when wind gusts try to push the van off course. A 9.2-inch digital rearview mirror is optional and uses rear-facing cameras to display a view of what’s behind the van—a feature that’s especially handy for ProMaster models equipped without rear windows.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
All ProMaster vans are motivated by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that provides 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. In our track tests, the Ram ProMaster made it from zero to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. That’s a solid performance, but other vans in this segment are quicker. For example, the Ford Transit made the same sprint in a mere 6.8 seconds, and the Nissan NV took 7.5 seconds to complete the run. The ProMaster can tow up to 6800 pounds, but that’s still less towing power than rivals such as the Transit (7500 pounds). However, the Ram van compensates with its strong payload capability. It can accommodate up to 4680 pounds, giving it a higher payload rating than the Transit. When it comes to overall handling, the Ram ProMaster is notably less refined than many of its rivals. The steering system is loose and numb, and competing vans provide smoother ride quality.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Full-size vans such as the ProMaster are exempt from fuel-economy standards. As a result, the Ram van hasn’t been tested by the EPA. During our time with a ProMaster, we observed fuel economy of 14 mpg. That’s equal to the mileage we observed with a Ford Transit and better than the mileage we observed with a Nissan NV (11 mpg).
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The ProMaster provides the driver with an expansive, wide-angle view of the road. The cabin looks more spartan than those in rival vans from Ford and Mercedes-Benz, but the overall design is reasonably attractive. The passenger-van variant of the ProMaster comes with a huge drawback, though: it’s sold solely with front seats. Since factory-installed rear seats aren’t offered, you’ll have to go to the trouble of finding a third-party upfitter if you want to use a ProMaster to ferry passengers. Rivals such as the Ford Transit are available with factory-installed seating for up to 15 passengers. Another shortcoming concerns road noise: The ProMaster isn’t as effective as some rivals at keeping the din of traffic out of the cabin.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The base ProMaster comes with a 5.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, as well as a four-speaker sound system. Bluetooth phone connectivity is standard for hands-free calls, and there’s also Bluetooth streaming music on board. The list of optional equipment includes SiriusXM satellite radio and navigation. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration isn’t offered; nor is Android Auto.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The 2022 ProMaster hasn’t received an overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For 2022, the ProMaster no longer falls short in the safety-feature category, though. It now offers driver-assistance features you’d expect to see on most consumer vehicles, albeit as optional extras. It even can be ordered with an digital rearview mirror. Key safety features include:
- Standard crosswind assistance system
- Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection
- Available forward collision warning with automated emergency braking
