PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY

The 2022 Hardtop Cooper trim is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged turbo-three engine that produces 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, delivering an EPA-rated 28/38 mpg city/highway (28/37 mpg for the four-door Hardtop) with the standard six-speed manual and 27/35 mpg with the six-speed automatic transmission. The Cooper S’ 2.0-liter turbo-four makes 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque and is rated at 23/32 mpg with the six-speed manual for the two- and four-door, and 25/32 mpg with the six-speed automatic for both body styles, as well. The two-door John Cooper Works packs a 228-hp, 236-lb-ft of torque 2.0-liter turbo-four that is rated at 23/32 mpg with the six-speed manual and 25/32 mpg with the six-speed automatic. The Mini Hardtop is only available in front-wheel drive. In Motor Trend testing, the 2015 Mini Hardtop Cooper S (same engine as the 2019 model) with the six-speed manual hit 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and stopped from 60 mph in a short 108 feet.

SAFETY

The 2022 Mini Hardtop (two-door) received a four-star overall safety rating out of five stars from the NHTSA. In IIHS testing, the Mini Hardtop received the highest rating of Good in all conducted crash tests and the second-highest rating of Advanced for the front crash prevention test by avoiding a 12 mph collision and reducing the speed of a 25 mph collision by 7 mph thanks to the automatic braking feature found in the adaptive cruise control system. The Hardtop Cooper comes standard with a rearview camera with parking sensors. The self-parking system is found in the Technology package that also consists of a navigation system displayed on an 8.8-inch center screen. A color head-up display, an adaptive cruise control system, and automatic high beams are optional.

UTILITY (CARGO SPACE AND INTERIOR ROOM)

The two-door Hardtop can hold up to 8.7 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and up to 34 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The four-door model offers more with 13.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total of 40.7 with the rear seats down. Front seat legroom is the same for both models at 41.4 inches but the four-door Hardtop has more rear-seat legroom, at 32.3 inches versus the two door’s 30.8 inches.
