Performance and Fuel Economy
The 2022 Sorento comes standard with a 2.4-liter I-4 rated at 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque that’s paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. A 3.3-liter V-6 with 290 hp and 255 lb-ft is optional on the LX and standard on the EX, SX and SXL trims, and it comes paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Full EPA fuel economy ratings haven’t been released yet but the four-cylinder model with front-wheel drive is rated at 22/29 mpg city/highway in front-drive form. The 2022 Sorento 2.4 with all-wheel drive was rated at 21/25 mpg; the 3.3-liter V-6 models were rated 18/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 17-18/23-25 mpg with all-wheel drive. The 2022 Sorento 3.3 gets a new eight-speed automatic, so fuel economy could see a slight improvement.
Safety
The NHTSA gave the 2022 Sorento a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS hasn’t crash tested the 2022 Sorento yet but the 2021 model received a Good rating on all crashworthiness tests for which it’s been tested except for the headlights test, where it got an Average rating (Good is the highest possible score). In the front crash prevention test, the 2022 Sorento got a Superior rating after it avoided a collision in 12- and 25-mph tests (Superior is the highest possible rating on the front crash prevention test).
On the EX, SX and SXL trims, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, driver attention alert, and adaptive cruise control come standard. high beam and low beam assists are standard on the SXL trim and optional on the SX. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert come standard on all but the base L trim.
Utility
When properly equipped, the four-cylinder Sorento can tow up to 2,000 pounds. The more powerful V-6-powered Sorento is able to tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Behind the third row, the 2022 Sorento features 11.3 cubic feet of cargo space and that can be expanded to 38 cubic feet with the third row folded. Fold the standard 40/20/40 split-folding second row and third row and you have 73 cubic feet of cargo space.
