The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is a midsize truck that slots below the larger, full-size Tundra and is available in rear- or four-wheel drive configurations. Two bed lengths and three cab variants are available.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma comes standard with a 2.7-liter I-4 with 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, and is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also an optional 3.5-liter V-6 with 278 hp and 268 lb-ft that can be had with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
EPA ratings for the base four-cylinder are 19/23 mpg city/highway for rear-drive models and 19/22 mpg with four-wheel drive. Opting for the V-6 doesn’t come at the cost of fuel economy with the automatic-equipped rear-drive Tacoma rated at 19/24 mpg and the four-wheel drive version coming in at 18/23 mpg. The least efficient Tacoma is the TRD Pro, which is rated at 18/21 mpg with the manual and 17/20 mpg with the automatic.
Four-cylinder variants can tow up to 3,500 pounds of payload when properly equipped. With the available V-6 Tow Prep package, the V-6-powered Tacoma can tow up to 6,800 pounds in the rear-drive Access Cab configuration with the standard bed or 6,500 pounds with four-wheel drive. Double cab models with the V-6 can tow up to 6,700 pounds in rear-drive guise and 6,400 pounds with four-wheel drive. Opting for the long bed drops the rear-drive double cab’s towing capacity down to 6,600 pounds.
The NHTSA gave the 2020 Tacoma a four-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS has yet to test the 2020 Tacoma but the 2018 model received a Good score on all crashworthiness tests except for the passenger side front small overlap impact where it hasn’t been tested yet and the headlights test where it received a Poor rating (Good is the highest possible score). The IIHS hasn’t crash-tested the 2020 Tacoma’s front crash prevention features.
Now standard on all Tacomas for the 2020 model year is Toyota Safety Sense-P, which bundles together forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane departure warning. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available only on the TRD Sport and higher trims
