Auto writers say the 2022 Honda Civic’s smooth powertrain, strong resale value and wealth of standard features make it a solid contender in an increasingly crowded field.
The Civic comes with a four-cylinder engine, and most test drivers say that the base Civic accelerates briskly and that the standard five-speed manual transmission has a clutch that’s easy to use. Many critics are especially fond of the available continuously variable transmission (CVT) that was added this year, saying that it’s very smooth and makes excellent use of the engine’s power. The Civic gets its best fuel economy ratings when equipped with the CVT, with an EPA-estimated 22/28 mpg city/highway, which is quite good for the class. Test drivers say the Civic has strong brakes, and that the suspension does a nice job of absorbing imperfections in the road. However, some note that the 2022 Civic isn’t the most fun-to-drive car in the class.
Automotive journalists write that a mix of high-quality plastics and soft-touch surfaces make the Honda Civic feel more upscale than in previous model years. Test drivers note that the use of sound deadening materials makes the cabin very quiet. Front seats are comfy and there’s plenty of room in the rear seats, they add. The Civic is very well-equipped for the class, and comes with features like a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a function that reads incoming text messages aloud, a USB port, an auxiliary audio jack and steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. Optional features include an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch-screen display, navigation, a multi-angle rearview camera, a power moonroof and automatic climate control. Also available is Honda LaneWatch, which uses a camera mounted under the passenger side mirror to show the driver what’s in his or her blind spot. Auto writers say it’s quick and easy to stream audio from a smartphone using the Bluetooth and they like the newly available touch-screen display, saying it’s intuitive to use. Cargo space is on the small side for a sedan, but test drivers are pleased with the amount of interior storage compartments.
