NEW 2022 Volkswagen Atlas
PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY
The 2022 Atlas comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbo I-4 with 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A 3.6-liter V-6 with 276 hp and 266 lb-ft is available on the base S trim and standard on the rest of the lineup. Both engines come exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
EPA fuel economy ratings are 22/26 mpg city/highway with the four-cylinder and 17/24 mpg with the V-6 in front-drive guise. Opting for all-wheel drive, which is exclusive to the V-6, drops fuel economy figures down to 17/23 mpg.
SAFETY
The 2022 Atlas received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS has only tested the 2018 model, which received a 2017 Top Safety Pick designation. In the IIHS’ front crash prevention test, the Atlas received a Superior rating after it avoided a collision in a 12-mph test and reduced the speed of a 25-mph impact by 17 mph (Superior is the highest rating on the forward collision prevention test).
Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all trims. Lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control are standard only on the SE w/ Tech, SEL and SEL Premium grades. High beam assist is only available on the range-topping SEL Premium.
UTILITY
With all seats in place, the 2022 Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the third row down and capacity grows to 55.5 cubic feet. Maximum cargo capacity with the second- and third rows folded is 96.8 cubic feet.
When properly equipped, the 2022 Atlas can tow 2,000 pounds with the base four-cylinder and up to 5,000 pounds with the V-6.
