Overview
The base 740i (RWD) and 740i xDrive (AWD) models are powered by a 320-hp, 330-lb-ft of torque, 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6, and have an EPA-rating of 21/29 mpg city/highway and 20/29 mpg in RWD and AWD forms. The 750i and 750i xDrive models pack a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft and is rated at 16/25 mpg and 17/25 mpg for the xDrive. The 740e xDrive iPerformance plug-in model utilizes a 255-hp, 295 lb-ft 2.0-liter turbo-four paired to an electric motor that has a combined power output 322 hp and 369 lb-ft and delivers 27 mpg combined. Thanks to the large battery pack, the 740e can drive up to 14 miles on all-electric power. The uber-luxurious Alpina B7 xDrive uses the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 but tuned to produce 600 hp and 590 lb-ft and delivers 16/25 mpg. The range-topping M760i xDrive is powered by a 6.5-liter twin-turbo V-12 that churns out an impressive 601 hp and 590 lb-ft and is rated at 13/20 mpg. All engine are backed by an eight-speed automatic.
Like many flagships, the 7 Series comes standard with many premium options including 18-inch V-spoke light alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, Dakota leather upholstery, a 14-way power front seats, high-gloss Fineline wood trim, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, Display Key with a LCD touchscreen, leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.2-inch display screen with 3D navigation, Gesture Control, 4-zone climate control, panoramic moonroof, and the iDrive 6.0 system with touchpad controller. Standard equipment in the range-topping M760i consists of 20-inch double spoke light alloy wheels, Adaptive full LED headlights, M rear spoiler, 20-way power multi-contour front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, illuminated door sills with V12 logo, M leather steering wheel, full-color head-up display, parking assistant, and heated front and rear seats. If you expect to be driven around, opt for the rear executive lounge seating package and your 7 Series will receive adjustable rear comfort seats, adjustable rear foot rest, rear seat entertainment screens with a 7.0-inch Touch Command Tablet, a foldable table for the right rear passenger, and rear massaging seats.
Safety
The 7 Series may not come standard with any driver assist safety features but it does include a system that will disconnect the alternator, fuel pump, and starter from the battery and will automatically open all doors and turn on hazard lights in the case of an accident. If the Active Protection system detects an imminent accident, the car will pretension the seat belts, close the windows and moonroof, and active post-crash braking. Most should opt for the Driving Assistance package that includes Active Driving Assistant Plus which includes active cruise control with stop and go ability, automatic forward braking, lane departure warning, frontal collision warning, city collision mitigation, and Pedestrian Protection. Traffic Jam Assistant and active lane keeping with side collision avoidance are also included.
